What a Magnetic Night is
On a Magnetic Night, planned as one evening a week, everyone who claimed a seat shows up at the same time. Magnetic pairs you, and you spend 20 minutes on video with one person, then, when the room allows, 20 minutes with another. After each date you privately answer one question, whether you would like to see them again, and only mutual yeses are revealed.
There is nothing to do in between nights. No profiles to browse, no swiping, no conversations to keep alive. The full sequence is on How a Magnetic Night works.
Who it is for
It is for single adults in San Diego County who would rather find out in 20 minutes of real conversation than in three weeks of texting. It suits people who are tired of apps, people who find a crowded bar a hard place to meet anyone, and people whose schedule makes a fixed, short commitment easier than an open-ended one.
It is probably not for you if you enjoy browsing and choosing for yourself. On a Magnetic Night you do not pick who you meet.
When it starts
The first Magnetic Night is Thursday, December 3, 2026, at 7:00pm Pacific. A night needs enough people, in the right balance, to be worth showing up for. If we can’t seat a balanced room, we’ll move the night and email you at least 48 hours ahead. If a late cancellation means we have to move it later than that, we’ll tell you as soon as we know. Seats are not open yet: when they open, people on the founding list in San Diego County are emailed.
How seats and balance work
When you join the founding list we ask your gender and who you are looking for. Those two answers decide how many seats a night opens, and for whom, so that everyone who has a seat has someone to meet. Each side of the room has its own limit. If your side fills first you are placed on standby and told so.
If a night cannot be balanced it is moved rather than run lopsided, and everyone with a seat is told the new date.
From anywhere in the county
Because it is on video, it does not matter which part of the county you live in. Oceanside to Chula Vista is a long drive on a weeknight and no distance at all on a call. You join from your own home, on a phone or a laptop, in the browser. There is no venue, no parking and no app to install.
What happens after a mutual yes is up to the two of you, including whether and where you meet in person.
How it differs from in-person speed dating
In-person speed dating events put a group of people in one room and rotate them through a series of short conversations, often only a few minutes each. That format has real strengths. You meet a lot of people in one evening, you see how someone carries themselves in a room, and going out is part of the fun.
A Magnetic Night makes a different trade. You meet fewer people, one or two, for longer, 20 minutes each. You do it from home, so there is no travel and nobody else in the room watching. And you do not choose from a rotation; the app decides who you meet. If you like the energy of a room, an in-person event will suit you better. If the room is the part you dread, video may be easier. How it differs from dating apps
Dating apps typically work in three stages: browse profiles, exchange messages, then perhaps meet. They offer a great deal of choice and they fit around any schedule, and people do meet partners that way. The cost is time. Browsing and messaging can take weeks before you find out whether there is anything there in person.
Magnetic removes the first two stages. There is no browsing and no messaging; the first contact is the date itself. That saves time and it also takes away control, because you do not choose who you meet. It is a different tool, not a better one for everybody. If app fatigue is what brought you here, our piece on dating app burnout may be useful whether or not you ever try Magnetic.
What we do not know yet
Magnetic uses facial-geometry similarity as one ingredient in matching, on the idea that partners tend to resemble each other. Whether that predicts a good first date is unproven, and the beta is how we find out. We have no results to show you, because no nights have run. About Magnetic says more about what is and is not known.
Not in San Diego?
You can still join the founding list with your ZIP code. We will email you when Magnetic opens in your city. We cannot promise when that will be.
